Beta 1 = 174

It's real now!!!
As I watched Janet last night and this morning, I can see her beginning to let herself accept and feel happy that this is indeed a pregnancy. For the past couple of years, I've been swooning every time I saw kid’s clothes, stores, etc. Janet would indulge me and accompany me in/around them, but she wouldn't really get "involved" in the gushing. Now, she actually asked to go look through the stores- wooooo hooooo! I'm allowed to start buying books- I would like to avoid "What to Expect when Your Expecting" because I've heard it’s just a bit too much- but I could be persuaded otherwise. Any others you fabulous people would recommend?

We call that book, "what to expect when you're a paranoid neurotic."

(Though we currently have a very funny parody called "what to expect when you're expected," written from the fetus' point of view. highly recommended.)

The mayo clinic book isn't bad, full of information, etc. We have an old copy of it, from a friend, but I think they update it pretty frequently.

In general, though, we haven't found the books all that helpful. They're good at making us nervous, and really don't represent so many women.

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy. Funny yet informative without making you want to call the doctor at every twinge like the WTEWYE book.

what a nice, strong number! congrats again!

definitely avoid what to expect. you will learn *nothing*. my favorite pregnancy book is "the pregnancy journal: a day-to-day guide to a happy and healthy pregnancy" by a. christine harris. it tells you whats going on in there each day with the babe, which i enjoyed. no assumptions you have a husband either, which is nice!

It's true, the what to expect books are popular but a little fear-based for my tastes. There are a lot of others out there, some folks really love the Sears books [The Baby Book, The Pregnancy Book, etc, by William Sears] and Touchpoints [Brazelton] are classics - especially for reference.

There are loads of others but the key is to take what you like and leave the rest.

I am new to the pregnancy books, but a sort of pregnancy book that I like is misconceptions by Naomi Wolfe. I find it to be an exploration regarding what pregnancy is like and how it can change you emotionally, psychologically, and as a person. What the cultural exceptions of pregnant women and mothers are and how that can silence women. Its not really a pregnancy book, but I thought it was a good contrast to what to expect, I bought them together
